The ‘miracle material’ graphene was discovered by
examining scotch tape that was usually discarded. Is it common to throw away
more than we realize? When dealing with data, we frequently discard a significant
amount due to lack of quality or missing values. Maybe there is just as much value in
examining the throw-away data as there is in examining the quality data. The main take away message is that there is still plenty to discover
about the world. After all, the most intelligent scientist in the world could
have easily missed the scotch tape.
I thought this was a very valid point, especially considering the time that we live in. We live in a use and throw away society, you don't expect to have most things 5, 10, or 20 years down the line, whether it be a job, a phone, a music player. It does make me wonder, in this time of casually throwing out last years treasures, are we possibly losing great future treasures in the process.

ReplyDeleteI would hate to think that there was nothing left to discover or make better. Not much motivation to be good at anything.
